Alexa, Pass the Salt: AI assistant embodiment for empathizing
human-machine interaction

Design Process
'Alexa, Pass the Salt' explores the nuances of human-machine interactions, focusing on the overlooked social and behavioral implications of voice assistants.
Research revealed that devices like Alexa and Siri often encourage command-based, impolite interactions, raising concerns about their long-term influence on human behavior and communication norms.
The project challenges this dynamic by reimagining how voice assistants might foster more thoughtful, polite exchanges. By introducing playful yet intentional scenarios, it examines how design can shift machines from passive tools to active participants in the rituals of human interaction, ultimately fostering empathy and awareness in our daily lives.

Social Robots appeared ahead of LLM's, not living to their expectations.

I was infulenced by Disney charecters and thier animative deisgn process. Trying to create figures based on cute and expressive features.

The Boss
Sleek plastic with a polished finish for a professional, tech- forward aesthetic.

Lamp
Minimalist matte surfaces and wood accents to seamlessly integrate into a living room environment.

Teddy
Fabric-covered outer
layers to evoke comfort for
children, with movable ears
to express emotions like
happiness.

Each robot has a mechanical button for operating a lid covering its eye/camera. Therefor maintaining privacy preferences brought up by users
The models were powered by a custom electronics system I designed using Arduino microcontrollers, integrated with actuators to enable dynamic physical expressions, such as Teddy’s ear movements.
Sensors and motors were carefully programmed to enhance interactivity and responsiveness.

The project builds on insights from my interaction study, where I explored how design shapes human-object communication.
The study analyzed how subtle changes in behavior influence user perception and interaction patterns.
These findings informed the distinct personalities and interaction modalities of the three avatars.
